Lilian wins Gold at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists!

We are thrilled to announce that one of our exceptional Grade 11 Ruthies, Lilian Chikusa, along with her partner, Precious Chezi, has won Gold at the prestigious Eskom Expo for Young Scientists. Their research project on Climate Change not only showcased their scientific and research abilities, but also marked a historic achievement, as they became the first learners from Jeppe High School for Girls to win Gold at this event.

Journey to Gold

The journey began in August 2023, when Ms. Rafedile, a Jeppe old girl herself, pioneered the first Science Fair held at Jeppe Girls. Competing among her peers, Lilian and Precious' project stood out, earning them a spot in the District Eskom Expo for Young Scientists event held at Sci Bono on 18 May. Here, Lilian competed against the brightest young minds in the district, and her and Precious' dedication paid off, securing an invitation to the Regional approvals qualification on 13 July.

Lilian and Precious’ hard work culminated in the Regional finals on 20 July, where they presented their research with confidence and clarity. Their project not only impressed the judges but also highlighted the pressing issue of Climate Change, underlining the importance of scientific inquiry and innovation in addressing global challenges.

Lessons in Perseverance and Success

Through this journey, Lilian discovered invaluable lessons. She learned that hard work truly pays off and that success is a product of patience and persistence. Balancing her academic responsibilities with the demands of the competition taught her how to manage competing priorities, a skill that will undoubtedly serve her well in the future.

About the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists

The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists hosts a series of regional science fairs for pre-selected learners across South Africa, offering a platform for young scientists to showcase their scientific skills. These events celebrate innovation, creativity, and intellectual curiosity, where budding scientists present their research projects and discoveries. Participants engage with students, teachers, and professionals in various Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Innovation (STEMI) fields, gaining valuable insights and appreciation for their efforts.

By bringing together individuals from diverse areas, the Eskom Expo fosters a culture of scientific exploration and cooperation, inspiring the next generation of scientists to explore new frontiers in knowledge and contribute to the advancement of science and technology in the country.

Celebrating Our Young Scientist

We are immensely proud of Lilian’s outstanding achievement and her contribution to scientific inquiry. We look forward to seeing her future endeavours and the positive impact she will undoubtedly make in the field of Science. We would also like to thank Ms. Rafedile for the vision she had of including Jeppe Girls in formal scientific research competitions, Mrs. Labuschagne who mentored Lilian and Precious throughout the competition, and Ms. Mokonyane who has become a valuable member of Ms. Rafedile's Science Fair team.
