Ruth First, the inspiration and motivation behind our Trust, was on the forefront of our minds this month as the 17th of August was the 41st anniversary of her assassination. We are always reminded of the sacrifices she made, her fierce determination being at the heart of a democratic South Africa. Nelson Mandela recalled Ruth as being “brilliant… She did not suffer fools, she was energetic, systematic, hard-working … and make the maximum effort to produce the best result. She was fearless, she could criticize anybody and she rubbed people …in the wrong way at times. Ruth spent her life in the service of the people of southern Africa. Her life, and her death, remains a beacon to all who love liberty.”
Justice Albie Sachs, who was a close friend of Ruth First, and the Patron of the Ruth First Jeppe Memorial Trust, had this to say about Ruth during his endorsement of the Trust: “Ruth First was a wonderful friend, a brilliant thinker and writer and remarkably courageous in pursuit of freedom. I will do everything I can to honour her memory. I am delighted that Jeppe High School for Girls has taken this initiative which I support wholeheartedly. I commend it to all who value Ruth’s profound contribution to the establishment of democracy in South Africa, and respect the sacrifice she made. It will be wonderful for many young women of diverse backgrounds to be given the opportunity to obtain top quality education at Ruth’s old school and thus follow in her footsteps.”
WE ARE ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTED THAT JUSTICE ALBIE SACHS WILL BE THE SPEAKER AT OUR ANNUAL FUNCTION SCHEDULED FOR 19 OCTOBER 2023.
Thanks to you… We pride ourselves in mentoring our recipients with strength and leadership skills which will enable them to go out into the world as strong capable woman who can make a difference. Just like Ruth First. If this opportunity was not afforded to them, we would be failing to address a huge need in our country. It is the constant support of you; the Foundations, Trusts, individual donors and staunch supporters who cheer us on and share what we do with others, that give us the privilege to do this amazing work with these very special young ladies.
Thank you for your ongoing support. Without our amazing donors, the journey for these wonderful ladies would have been that much more challenging.
